Ah, the air is cooler, lighter, brighter, less humid. Leaves are turning. My dogs are friskier. They want to stay outside longer. Welcome to Florida's golden time. Time to get off the couch and be outside. You can watch reruns later. Here are three authentic autumn adventures waiting for you:
- See the world from a new vantage point, namely riding on a horse. Visit Youngs Paso Fino ranch and take a tour or a trail ride. Located in the rolling hills surrounding Ocala you'll meet very special horses and learn about a working ranch.
- Visit a farmer's market. Fall and winter are prime time. Bring your camera. Farmer's markets have a little bit of everything - honey, fresh produce, home made baked goods, plants, crafts, organic products. The Farmers Market in downtown Fernandina Beach, for example, is open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Located on Centre Street and Seventh Avenue in a parking lot, the market is packed with color and temptations like homemade cookies. Sometimes musicians come and jam. This is a happening place.
- Wander through north central Florida and find O'Tooles Organic Herb Farm outside of Madison. The land has been in Betty's family since the 1840's. Betty and Jim O'Toole are down home friendly. After you see the organic herb gardens and their gift shop, sit a while in a rocking chair on the porch. Look out over the beautiful country scene and listen to their stories. From time to time they have classes and demonstrations. On December 1, O'Tooles goes all out and has a Holiday Open House.
