The National Trust for Historic Preservation (www.nationaltrust.org) announced on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008 the selection of its 2008 Dozen Distinctive Destinations.
The only one selected in Florida for 2008 is our very own Apalachicola! Wahoo! Here's what they said about one of my favorite places:
"Apalachicola, an authentic coastal town renowned for its mouth-watering seafood and singular charm, features a waterfront dotted with fishing vessels, a downtown filled with eclectic shops and streets lined with historic buildings."
On Friday, February 29, Apalachicola will have a day of celebration of the designation (www.apalachicolabay.org). The event takes place at the Gibson Inn (www.gibsoninn.com), 51 Avenue C, Apalachicola. Van Johnson, Mayor, City of Apalachicola will be there along with Anita Grove, Apalachicola Bay Chamber of Commerce and Karen Nickless, National Trust for Historic Preservation.
This is the ninth time the National Trust for Historic Preservation has announced a list of Dozen Distinctive Destinations. In each community, the residents have stood up and taken a course of action to protect the town's character and sense of place.
Want a preview of Apalachicola before you go to this distinctive destination? Check out the video to your right called "Apalachicola and the Forgotten Coast." The VISIT FLORIDA crew and myself loved this town. And the Apalachicola oysters? Ah, well, you must try them. Tucker in at Avenue Sea Restaurant inside the Gibson Inn.
Congratulations, Apalachicola! It couldn't happen to a nicer town!
Justs in case you're wondering about the other 2008 Distinctive Destinations, here they are: Aiken, S.C., Columbus, Miss., Crested Butte, Colo., Fort Davis, Texas, Friday Harbor, Wash., Portland, Ore., Portsmouth, N.H., Red Wing, Minn., Ste. Genevieve, Mo., San Juan Bautista, Calif., Wilmington, N.C. |
