Got pollinators? Got a camera? Start clicking.
ButterflyFest happens in Gainesville Oct. 24-25, 2009. Sponsored by the Florida Museum of Natural History, the festival has a new addition this year: the first-ever Pollinator Photography Contest.
What is a pollinator? Your kids know the answer -- a bat, bee, bird, butterfly or moth. The purpose of this contest is to educate and promote awareness of local pollinators (we need them) through photography.
There are two entry categories: Adult, ages 18 and up, and Junior, ages 10-17. Entries must be submitted from Aug. 15 through Sept. 1. First place winners in each category get cash awards. All winning and honorable-mention photographs will be displayed at the Florida Museum of Natural History from Oct. 24 through Nov. 30, 2009.
Download the 2009 Pollinator Photography Contest Entry Form and Rules here. Up to three entries per person and the entry fee is $10 per photo for adults, $8 per photo for juniors.
Pop quiz: What is the state butterfly of Florida?
Answer: Zebra Longwing butterfly. It is common in South Florida, especially Everglades National Park. They fly slowly and don't startle easily, making them good for photographs.
So, get outside with your camera, share a little sunshine, and take pollinator pictures! See you out there. Enjoy. |
