Florida's nighttime sky is a thing of beauty. Astronomers certainly agree.
Starting at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 30, at Silver River State Park, the Ocala Astronomy Club will train its telescopes to the heavens, and you're invited to the stargazing party. Bring a lawn chair or a blanket, and binoculars if you have them. Insect repellent is advised. The event is weather permitting.
Regular park entrance fees do apply -- $4 for a vehicle with up to eight people, $3 for a vehicle with a single person. Silver River State Park is located east of Ocala, one mile south of State Road 40 on State Road 35 (very close to the Silver Springs attraction with its glass-bottomed boats).
If you miss the star party on May 30, another stargazing evening is set for Saturday, June 13, starting at 7:30 p.m.
When I look at the nighttime sky, I don't have a clue what I'm looking at. Astronomers do, and they love to share their knowledge. It is pretty amazing to look through a telescope and see what looked like a twinkle ever so far away turn into a planet or star that is now magnified and pretty up close!
Spend an evening with the stars. Get to know the heavens. Enjoy. |
