There is still one week left to go see the wonderful Kimono exhibit at the Harn Museum of Art in Gainesville. Five of us went for a day trip and fell in love with kimonos.
The title is 'Fashioning Kimono: Art Deco and Modernism in Japan'. Almost 100 kimonos are set on stands, hanging full length with their arms out. The display is laid out in two big circles, you see the fronts, then walk around and see the backs.
Amazing colors, patterns, designs and styles. This is a feast for the eyes. To me a kimono is something to wear at home. In Japan, it was worn everywhere, with special kimonos for weddings and other events. In fact, the kimono used to be the dress of choice before western clothes got the upper hand in the 1940s. We had fun picking our favorite kimonos.
Along the walls are black and white photographs taken decades ago of women, some men and children, wearing their kimonos.
And the cost to see the kimonos and the other exhibits at the Harn? Nada. It is free. Hours are Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The kinomos are on display through May 17, 2009.
After seeing the kimonos and a nearby exhibit 'Uncommon Glazes: American Art Pottery, 1880-1950' we headed to the new wing of the museum. Downstairs is the Camellia Court Cafe with great views of the museum's landscaped gardens. We had a delicious lunch, and we decided a day out to discover new things is something we all need to do more often! Enjoy. |
