Here's a town that welcomes dogs
December 21, 2007
Are you a dog lover? I am. My two girls are ready to go anytime and now they have one more reason to wag their tails.  I've just discovered a wonderful, dog-friendly town, the kind of place you can go with your best four-legged friend or friends and feel at home.

Apalachicola is a laid-back, old northwest Florida town. The streets are wide and people are welcoming. Many store owners bring their dogs to work with them every day. We got to meet some of them. Lucky, a yellow Lab, comes with photojournalist Richard Bickel to Richard's art gallery. Lucky likes to take sun baths right by the front door.

Many businesses have water bowls outside their doors. Dogs and cats even have their own store, Petunia, with accessories for canines, cats and their people.

I was in Apalachicola this week with the VISIT FLORIDA video crew to film a video. Amon Focus, rich media developer, took a break from being behind the video camera and did a digital camera shoot with Butkus, a German Shepherd companion to one of the owners of the Gibson Inn. Butkus posed beautifully. This dog knows a photo op when he sees one. I got a photo of the two of them.

Gibson Inn, along with the Apalachicola River Inn and a number of beach home rentals on St. George Island, are dog-friendly. Did I mention there are miles of beaches nearby? Restaurants with outdoor seating also are dog-friendly.

By now your dogs are reaching for their leashes. I know mine are. Gather up the four-legged ones and let's go to Apalachicola.

Lucy - you should visit Sandestin this weekend for the dog parade and pier jump featured on Letterman. I'd love to see your comments on this weekend dedicated to man's best friend. For info, go to http://www.beachesofsouthwalton.com/coe/calendar.aspx. I bet the nice ladies at the beaches of south walton offices would get you some vip accommodations while you're there. Have fun!
