Good Times at Kumquat Festival in Dade City
February 02, 2009
Wow! Did you make it to the 12th annual Kumquat Festival on Saturday, Jan. 31? Celebrating Florida's tiniest citrus fruit, Dade City really knows how to have a great party.

A friend and I went, and it was our first time at this festival. We had a piece of kumquat pie, practically a required thing to do, and tasted the two main kinds of kumquats. Did you know that you can eat the whole thing, peel and all? One kind tastes like a burst of sour flavor when you first bite into the fruit, then as you chew it mellows a bit and becomes sweet. The other kind is sweet all the way. I liked them both. My friend only liked the sweet ones.

I confess, I got really carried away and bought a small kumquat tree to plant in my yard.

And beyond kumquats? The festival had a great arts and crafts show spread out over several blocks, live entertainment and a whole parking lot full of antiques and collectibles. We wandered and enjoyed it all. Plus, the weather was beautiful - clear blue skies and cool temperatures.

Now is a fine time to go to festivals and outdoor events - the weather alone gives you a good reason to be outside. See VISIT FLORIDA's listings of upcoming events and upcoming festivals, then pick a few, pack up the family and go!
