The confounding thing about art museum exhibits is that sometimes, you have to be at least slightly acquainted with the artist in order to understand and appreciate--or politely decline to admire--what you’re looking at. But not everybody’s an aficionado, and even those who are in the know can’t possibly be on familiar terms with every artist.
That’s why “Looking at Art: A Primer,” which is presented by the Boca Raton Museum of Art's Education Department through June 22, 2008, is not only a good idea, but something of a relief.
This enlightening exhibition, which is intended to inform and inspire artists of all ages, uses paintings, drawings, prints, photographs and sculptures from the museum’s Permanent Collection to teach a basic vocabulary of those art terms that assist artists in creating art, and viewers in critiquing art. These elements of art vocabulary consist of color, form, line, shape, space and texture, and the principles of design vocabulary comprise balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, repetition/rhythm, unity, value and variety. By combining these fifteen fundamentals, along with learning the precepts of their chosen medium, artists can create masterpieces.
Each master work is a fine example for many terms, and each included artist (see list below) is celebrated for a variety of reasons. Regardless, here’s what “Looking at Art: A Primer” is meant especially to impart: “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” and you are the judge.
The Boca Raton Museum of Art is open Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 10am – 5 p.m.; Wednesday 10 a.m. – 9 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday 12 p.m. – 5 p.m. Admission for Fall Exhibitions is $8 for adults, $6 for senior citizens (65 and older), $4 per person for group tours and $4 for students.
