Artists and the Olympics
June 05, 2008
Have you wondered about the large-scale artist who constructed the group of sculptures, called “The Runners,” that is located on the median of US 41, North Tamiami Trail, between downtown Sarasota and the airport? Well, here’s a clue—he’s the same one who constructed the site-specific work, commissioned by Alberta & Edwin Sherman for the Longboat Key Center for the Arts.

Okay, I know that wasn’t helpful. I just wanted to build up some suspense for Jorge Blanco, the Sarasota-based sculptor whose pieces can be found in Caracas, Venezuela; Tokyo, Japan; Reno, Nevada; and San Diego, California as well as his base town of Florida.

Turns out that Blanco has been invited to participate in the 3rd Beijing Art Biennale, opening on July 7, 2008, where he will exhibit his special edition sculpture “Rolling 2008” LE 1/3, Aluminum + powder coating (53” x 28” x 33”), as well as in the Symposium titled "Olympic Spirit and Artistic Pursuit," a one and a half day symposium for Curatorial Committee members, Artists, Art Critics, Scholars and Media from around the world.

Now that’s working on a grand international scale indeed. And here you thought only athletes made the Olympics.
