Bonita Springs Area Cultural Attractions
Asked by Liz Carlisle on June 25, 2009
Q: Hey Rayme, I will be traveling to Florida to the Bonita Springs area during the beginning of August. I was wondering if you know of any fun or interesting activities going on around that time, or just something we for sure should go see in that area. (Ft.Meyers...) I am 23 years old and like to experience more than just the night life of an area. Thanks for your time!!! Liz Carlisle
A: Hi Liz!

Sounds like you are gearing up for an exciting trip! I would love to make a few suggestions while you are in the area:

First things first, you must check out Fort Myers Art Walk. Occurring on the first Friday of every month, this event encourages visitors to enjoy local and national art on display along the riverside.

You can also take advantage of the "Half a Day, Twice the Value" cross promotion at the The Southwest Florida Museum of History and the Imaginarium Hands-On Museum & Aquarium.

Have a great time!

Hispanic Hot Spots
Asked by Amanda on April 22, 2009
Q: I'm looking for any Hispanic hot spots in Florida. I am in the Spanish interpreter program at Surry Community College in North Carolina and we're taking a trip this summer. Please let me know of anywhere that would be of interest. Thanks!
A: Hi Amanda!

Thank you for your question! First and foremost, I would like to mention my beloved Miami as a destination to definitely schedule in your trip. Latin culture is without a doubt a cornerstone of life in this city. While the Cuban influence is most prominent, you can also find pockets of Dominican, Mexican, Columbian and many other nationalities represented here.

Here are a few great articles that can help you home in on things to do all over our state:
Globetrotting Florida
Must-Sees for Cuban History and Culture
A little Latin Flavor in Tampa - Ybor City

And lastly read this article entitled Cuban Heritage to follow the Visit Florida Cuban Heritage Trail from Tampa all the way down to Miami.
Jazz in Florida
Asked by Peter Campbell on April 18, 2009
Q: I looked in vain for data on the jazz scene in Florida and found little to encourage me to come and explore what might be on offer in your state. Why?
A: Hi Peter!

I'm so surprised that you have had trouble finding information about jazz in Florida as there is a longstanding history of appreciation for this musical genre here. Read Pat McKanic's article entitled All That Jazz for more information about jazz from Jacksonville to the Florida Keys. Also, you may find it interesting to learn that jazz-related events are held all year 'round, such as the Pensacola Jazz Festival in Pensacola and the Tampa Bay Blues Festival in St. Petersburg.

I hope that this information is helpful! As a jazz lover myself, I highly recommend that you make the trip to our diverse and exciting state!

Jacksonville's Rock Roots
Asked by Peter Stadler on March 25, 2009
Q: I am from Germany and will be on holiday in Florida from April 2nd to 16th. I am interested in the origins of Jacksonville bands Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet and 38 Special. Can you give me some hints where to go to, to find out more about where they came from and how and where everything started? Or perhaps you know somebody I could contact! Thanks in advance,Peter
A: Hi Peter!

It's great to hear from such a passionate music fan!

Luckily for you, 38 Special will actually be performing on Wednesday Apr. 8 just south of Jacksonville at the Clay County Fairgrounds. To get tickets and learn more visit this website: www.reverbnation.com/venue/63353

Every October Jacksonville hosts a massive "Skynyrd Tribute Weekend". While it is a few months away,  I highly suggest that you contact the organizers of this event for more information on the history behind the group. Check out their website here: www.frynds.com. There's also a geat website that explores the history of the band here: www.lynyrdskynyrdhistory.com.

You can also head over to a local bookstore and buy the book "Southern rockers: the roots and legacy of Southern Rock" by Marley Brant to learn more about Molly Hatchet's roots in Florida.

I hope that these suggestions are helpful. Have a great time!
Girlfriend Getaway
Asked by Mel on March 15, 2009
Q: Hi Rayme,Some girlfriends and I are planning an all girl trip to Florida. We are looking for activities that are more diverse and cater to the 30 and up crowd. We're looking at Panama City or Destin, but are open to other areas in Florida. We're looking to travel in May or June. Any suggestions?
A: Hi Mel!

Panama City and Destin are great getaway cities! Here's a great story called "Beach Bonding in Destin" that can provide an outline for a perfect trip on the Emerald Coast this summer.

I also want to recommend Fort Meyers. There is an amazing VF article called "Chick Trip" that outlines the special packages offered at the GullWing Beach Resort. I recommend the "Chick Flicks" Package, which offers access to more than 200 films, candy and more to keep you and your girlfriends occupied. The "Women Who Wine" package will bring a wine tasting experience straight to you!

Shopping and entertainment expert Paula Lewis also posted a blog about a girl getaway experience in Amelia Island that may be of interest. You read her experience here.

No matter what you and your friends end up doing,  you are sure to have a blast in Florida!

Kissimee Reunion
Asked by sonja on January 28, 2009
Q: I am visiting Kissimmee next week and will meet friends traveling from Pt Charlotte. Please offer sites, gardens, culture, walking tours to see in the area.
A: Hi Sonja,

Thank you for your question! It sounds like you and your friends have started planning quite a trip!

Your first stop for information should be the VISIT FLORIDA page on Kissimmee to get some background information on the Central Florida city. To learn more about the communities that would make for a great exploring adventure, read the article called Orlando/Kissimmee Area.

Take a pleasant self guided walking tour through the 1950s  and 1960's inspired Old Town or enjoy a relaxing stroll through the 50 acre Harry P.Leu Gardens. For a more traditional arts experience, be sure to stop by the Orlando Museum of Art or the Mennello Museum of American Art.

And after a long day of taking in the sights, your group will definitely be hungry. Watch the VF video called Dining in Celebration for some great ideas on dining in the Kissimmee area.

Hope that these suggestions are helpful. Have a great trip!
Looking for a Bohemian Community
Asked by Dr. Zae Zatoon, Ph.D. on January 10, 2009
Q: Hi Rayme,You seem like the right person to ask. . .My husband Jack and I are wanting to move to Florida. Neither one of us, however, has ever been there before. Come April, we're going to pack a U-Haul with all our belongings and drive cross-country. Thus, we can use a few pointers. For starters, Jack is an artist, and I am a retired psychologist. I have been telling him about the international possibilities of the Miami galleries for years, and he will most definitely want to check out the art scene there and sell his work there as much as possible. But, the truth be told, I am not a city dweller, and I am in need of another, cozier place for the two of us to live.In a word, I am most comfortable in a "bohemian" environment with access to the beach, to shops and art galleries, to bistros, vegetarian restaurants, a health food store, and the like. The two of us are health conscious; so we need a gym and a good health food market nearby -- think raw, vegetarian, macrobiotic, and such.We also like to go to the movies. So we'll need access to movie theaters; we don't care to watch TV.To give you an idea of places that have worked for us in the past, Jack and I met in Bali, Indonesia and lived there for 5 years. Before that, I spent 13 years in the outer islands of Hawaii: Maui and the Big Island. Therefore, I am definitely more of a town person as long as there's a gym, health food stores and galleries handy.Got any ideas? I'd love to hear from you. Thanks much for your time.
A: Hi Dr. Zatoon!

Thanks so much for your question! It sounds like you and your husband are ready for a change! After being in South Florida for 3 years, I know the area very well and truly believe that Miami Beach would be the perfect location for you to put down roots!

This colorful city allows access to an unbelievable wealth of art galleries and museums on the island, as well as the opportunities available in the nearby downtown Miami and Design District (which has seen a huge boom in recent years).

There is also a major health food supermarket (Wild Oats), weekly farmers market (on Lincoln Road),  gyms on almost every other corner, world class bistros galore and a strong community vibe of bohemian types. Many people get around the area on bicycle. There is a huge movie theater that plays the latest releases also on Lincoln Road. And for someone so well traveled, you will also enjoy hearing a different language everywhere you go as many international travellers have also settled down here.

Feel free to read the following links for more information on life and the arts in Miami Beach:

1.Visit this comprehensive website for more information on all of the exceptional art galleries in the area: www.miamidesigndistrict.net. Photography in Southwest Florida
Asked by Dan Sheridan on January 08, 2009
Q: I will be visiting Southwest Florida (Marco Island, Naples area) Feb.13-20, 2009, any interesting photography activities during that time?
A: Hi Dan,

This question was not the easiest to answer, but you're in luck! While you are in South Florida be sure to catch  "Visions of Florida - A Clyde Butcher Retrospective" (a photographic exhibit by renowned black and white photographer Clyde Butcher) at The Southwest Florida Museum of History in Fort Meyers just 35 miles north of Naples. Admission is $5- $9.50) ($5 - $9.50) For more information call (239) 332-5955.

Here you can read a blog post I've written on the Clyde Butcher exhibition to learn more about the artist.

If you can manage to squeeze out one more day for your trip, you will be able to enjoy the 30th annual Naples Art Festival on Feb. 21 that promises to have wonderful photography on display.

Have a great trip!
Arts & Crafts Shows/Shakespeare Plays
Asked by Susan Huffman on January 04, 2009
Q: I am a fused glass artist and would like to know what venues are available (art & craft shows, etc.) during the summer and fall of 2009. Also, as a Shakespeare aficionado, are there any theaters which feature Shakespeare plays? Thanks.
A: Hi Susan!

After a bit of research I came across this great web resource that offers a comprehensive list of Florida arts & craft shows. Hopefully it will help you plan your debuts around the state! Check it out here.

As for Shakespeare, there are quite a few places around the state that pay homage to the Bard. Your best bets for classic stage performances would be the Original Shakespeare Theater in Orlando or the Palm Beach Shakespeare Festival at www.pbshakespeare.org.

Best of luck!

A Special Birthday Evening

Q: My wife is celebrating her 59th birthday on 12/16. Can you recommend a really nice day or night out for me to plan for her?
A: Hi Frank,

I've got a great idea that combines the arts with a great meal, which is, in my book, the makings of any enjoyable evening. The Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre in Fort Meyers. On the night of December 16th, you can ring in the  holiday season while watching Irving Berlin's magical rendition of the White Christmas. You can visit their website here, or call 239-278-4422 to purchase tickets.

From a Culture Enthusiast
Asked by Anastasia on November 21, 2008
Q: We love Jazz, swing dancing, art museums and other cool cultural things. Where and when should we visit Florida?
A: Hi Anastasia!

Visiting anywhere Florida at any time of year would be a special experience. There is always so much going and so much enthusiasm for the arts.

Here are my suggestions:

Every year over 90,000 people flock to Clearwater for its annual jazz festival. I highly recommend this event, held in October, as a focus point for your trip. For more on the Clearwater Jazz Festival, visit their website here.

While there, you can easily visit surround cities Tampa and St.Petersburg for a wealth of cultural activities. Read  Tampa Bay: A Cultural Hotspot  and watch the video See the World through The Artists’ Eyes: St. Petersburg Arts Center for great ideas!

North Eastern Florida in 5 days
Asked by kathy on November 16, 2008
Q: We are planning a Florida trip from January 31 to February 4. Departing from Jacksonville, we want to see Amelia Island and St.Augustine. We need to see arts and culture (-eg opera, Victorian homes, events, festivals, art galleries.) Are there any gardens worth seeing?
A: Thanks for your question. There is quite a bit that you can fit into your 5 day trip along the north eastern coast of Florida. First, read this article called Amelia Island and St. Augustine for helpful tips on heritage hilights, arts & culture opportunities and state parks. In particular, the Mission Nombre de Dios in St. Augustine offers gorgeous gardens in a historical context.

Family Friendly and Affordable
Asked by Tiphanee on November 10, 2008
Q: My daughter is turning five and we have never been to Florida. What attractions would be of interest that I can enjoy also besides an amusement park? P.S we are on a STRICT budget.
A: Hi Tiphanee,

Thanks for your question! There is an endless variety of affordable activities for children across the state of Florida that are both fun and educational at the same time. While i'm not sure if you have a specific destination in mind, I can give you a quick rundown of some interesting cities and what they can offer you and your daughter:

Sarasota
First, watch this great video called "Sarasota for Children of All Ages", to learn more about family friendly activities such as the Sarasota Jungle gardens.

Pensacola
Read this article for fun and free family attractions called "Free and Easy in Pensacola."

Orlando
While it is best known as the home of the amusement parks, Orlando also offers some affordable options for children and their parents to enjoy. Enjoy this article called "Unexpected Orlando."

I hope that these suggestions are helpful. Have a great trip!

Four Days in Boca Raton
Asked by Constance Zulaica on November 06, 2008
Q: I am taking my husband to Boca Raton for his 50th birthday. What would you recommend for us to see while we are there for 4 days?
A: Hi Constance!

Thanks for your question. It sounds like you are getting an early start on planning this special trip for your husband and I am glad to be of service! To get yourself acquainted with the area, first visit the VISIT FLORIDA Boca Raton page here.

Now, here are my top three cultural picks:
1. If your husband enjoys classical music be sure to check out the Boca Raton Philharmonic Symphonia, one of the most influential orchestras in the region. In February you can catch  a special performance of "Tchaikovsky and Romanticism."

2.The Boca Raton Museum of Art is a great place to start with an impressive permanent collection that houses works of artists like Matisse, Picasso and Degas. During February you and your husband can enjoy the intricate sculptures of Italian artist Rabarama.

3. For an escape to Japan without the long flight time, I highly recommend that you go to The Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens. A short drive north of Boca Raton, Delray Beach serves as a beautiful setting for this magnificent display of gardens and symbols of Japanese culture.

And if you're interested in other cultural opportunities, visit the official website for the city of Boca Raton: www.ci.boca-raton.fl.us/

Best of luck!
Best of Miami Group Tour
Asked by Mike on October 31, 2008
Q: Hi Rayme, I'm in the process of planning a group trip for about 100 seniors in February 09. We're looking to take a bus tour for a day in the Miami area. Any suggestions on what places might be a big hit, particularly ones with a Jewish focus to them? Thanks!
A: Hi Mike,

Sounds like a wonderful trip that you are planning for quite a large group! Not only will your group enjoy the warm weather during February in Miami, but they are also bound to enjoy some amazing cultural experiences. Here are a few tips:

Miami Beach Art Deco District. The magnificent Art Deco hotels on Ocean Drive are an iconic symbol of Miami's tropical character. The pastel colored buildings reveal an interesting history. Learn more about this district by watching Jen Karetnick's great video on Miami Architecture.

Jewish Museum of South Florida. This museum reflects upon over 250 years of Jewish history, art and culture in Florida with exciting exhibitions and a multifaceted permanent collection. Visit their website at www.jewishmuseum.com

Miami Cultural Community Tours run by Urban Tour Host. Call them to customize a Jewish Heritage tour that will perfectly suit your group. Visit their website at www.miamiculturaltours.com/index.php

Hope that these suggestions are helpful. Have a wonderful trip!
Best Florida Attractions
Asked by Steve on October 29, 2008
Q: What are the 3 best Florida attractions that you would recommend?
A: Hi Steve,

There are so many amazing cultural attractions to choose from in this State. Here are my top three choices:

1. The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, located in downtown Miami, has been my cultural home away from home for the last few  years. Their rich programming has allowed me to enjoy numerous world music concerts, theatre performances, and dance shows all in one place. Some of my fondest memories of arts in Florida can be traced back to this venue.

2. One of the biggest attractions in St.Petersburg, The Salvador Dali Museum, has one of the most interesting permanent collections I have ever experienced. Regular events like live musical performances, film series, lectures and traveling exhibitions also help to keep things interesting at this shrine to one of Spain's most important artists. Our previous Arts & Culture expert, Jen Karetnick created a wonderful video for VISIT FLORIDA that features the amazing museum. You can watch that video here.

3. My all time favorite attraction comes to Florida only once a year. Art Basel Miami Beach has proven itself as the most influential gathering of artists and their works in the entire country. Created as a sister event to the prestigious Art Basel in Switzerland, this Miami Beach event will welcome over 2,000 artists this year from December 4th-7th, 2008. Stay tuned to VISITFLORIDA.com for my coverage of Art Basel Miami Beach later this year.

Thank you for your question!
Tarpon Springs Day Tour
Asked by Val on October 02, 2008
Q: I am going to be staying in Tampa and I want to know if there is a tour company that will take me up to the Tarpon Springs area? I am looking for a 1 day tour.
A: Hi Val,

Thanks so much for your question. Our Authentic Florida Expert, Lucy Beebe Tobias, had a great answer for you:

I could not find a tour company that does one day trips from Tampa to Tarpon Springs. Two tour companies do provide transportation if you have a large group and need a bus - Anywhere Tours of Florida in Tampa at (813) 620-3332 and Gunny's Intrastate Travel and Tours in Spring Hill at (352) 597-8889.

Family Fun on the Space Coast
Asked by teresa on October 01, 2008
Q: Ive never been to Florida- I'm not very computer savvy, and am overwhelmed with information. My husband and I would like to travel in February to see the Kennedy Space launch. We would like to stay at beachfront hotel. My husband is into history and sunken ships. I am into arts and crafts and entertainment. Can you help? Thanks in advance.
A: Hi Teresa!

It is very easy to get overwhelmed as there is quite a bit of information out there on all of the great things going on in our state. Luckily you’ve come to the right place for all of your travel needs.

February is a great time to visit the Space Coast! The temperatures are the warmest in the country and there are tons of great things going on. The Kennedy Space launch will be an exhilarating treat. To get yourself acquainted with the area, read Mitzi Gordon's article, Insider's Guide to the Space Coast. For a great beachfront hotel, have a look at the VISIT FLORIDA page called Space Coast Hotels & Places to Stay Listings.

Check out my recent article for VISIT FLORIDA called “Inspired Adventure” for more information on great things to do on the Space Coast including surf museums, arts fairs and music festivals. A great nautical museum can be found in in Melbourne, called the McLarty Treasure Museum. For more information on that museum, click here.

Hope that this helps to make your vacation planning go a bit smoother! Enjoy the state!

Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota
Asked by Bess Callejo on August 13, 2008
Q: What is the cost for entry to the Ringling Brothers Estate and Museum?
A:
We all remember the days of going to the circus as children and being amazed by the colorful clowns, the delicate acrobats and jubilant trained animals. The Ringling Family has brought joy to the American people for decades with their elaborate and fun filled shows. What may people don’t know is that the celebrated family also has a massive estate in Sarasota that has been turned into a museum chronicling their legacy.
The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota is located on the grounds of the Ringling family estate. John Ringling’s wife was an avid art collector, gathering treasures from all around the country and Europe. These collections are on display year round, along with a series of global art exhibitions. There is also a comprehensive art library open to researchers, students and the public.
Admission is $19 for adults, $16 for seniors, and $6 for children and students and the museum is open 7 days a week from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. For more information on the museum and the estate, visit www.ringling.org.

 Thanks for your question!
Best Arts Town
Asked by Debbie Reid on August 10, 2008
Q: What would you say is the best arts town in Florida for an artist to live and work in?
A:
Thanks for your question! While this wasn’t an easy question to answer, my answer is Miami. Why? The news of Miami’s cultural and artistic renaissance is less than 10 years old, but so much has happened in that time. And more importantly, because of the city’s diverse cultural climate artists are not only recognized nationally, but also within international art circles.

Hosting international events like Miami Art Basel, film festivals like the Miami International Film festival, and music events like the Winter Music Conference, Miami proves its merit on a global stage. In addition, the Wynwood Arts District has blossomed in the downtown area and boasts numerous galleries, boutiques and antique stores dedicated to artistry. Art and music programs at Miami Dade College, The Art Institute and the University of Miami are taught by world renowned professors and their frequent shows and exhibitions encourage large crowds. For more information on the arts and culture resources within the city, check out the Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau website here.

Other great cities for artists include Melbourne, Sarasota and  Tallahassee all with thriving cultural districts. To learn more about these locations, read Jen Karetnick’s recent article called “Florida's Artist Centers, Colonies and Districts.”
Outdoor Music in Naples
Asked by lynn on August 03, 2008
Q: Are there any venues in the Naples area that have live outdoor music concerts?
A:
Hi there Lynn!

Naples is a wonderful city for music. The most popular venue for outdoor concerts is the Cambier Bandshell, located in the heart of Old Naples at Cambier Park at 755 Eighth Avenue. Many performing groups including the Naples Daily News Jazz Band, Naples Concert Band, Gulf Coast Big Band and others regularly put on impressive shows there.

Enjoy Jazz? Every year, the Naples Beach Hotel and Golf Club hosts “Summer Jazz on the Gulf,” a free concert series held on the breezy Watkins Lawn overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. Taking place on Saturday per month from 7pm10pm, this event allows hotel guests and visitors the opportunity to take in sme of the best acts around. On Saturday, August 23, you can catch the Women's Blues Revue, and on September 13 the  Stacey Knights Group will perform.

Collier-Seminole State Park, located at 20200 East Tamiami Trail, hosts an annual Bluegrass Festival in February that serves as the largest fundraiser for the park. Along with great music, vendors sell food and wares at booths. Campers are also welcome.

For more information on Naples and its many other musical attractions, visit the Naples Chamber of Commerce website.
Christmas Weather
Asked by Li KW on August 02, 2008
Q: What is the weather at Christmas time, is it cold with snow and what is the temperature range?
A:
Weather in Florida during the winter season varies greatly depending on the region you are visiting. South Florida maintains a milder climate throughout the winter, while Northern and Central Florida have been known to get a few snowflakes every so often.

Check out www.weather.com for average temperatures for the town you plan to visit. Whatever the weather, you are bound to have an amazing trip!

Small Town Arts
Asked by Kim Taylor on July 28, 2008
Q: Hello, I am looking for a small quaint town for a girls day out. We like to shop, look at galleries, visit tea rooms etc.
A:

Hi Kim!

Thanks for your question. It sounds like you and your girlfriends are ready for a true cultural adventure! The perfect local for you is Arcadia, located just east of Sarasota. Everything you are looking for can be found in this historical former railroad town located in the tranquil Peace River Valley.

Visit the Arcadia Tea Room for the best finger sandwiches and warm drinks that will have you and your friends feeling refreshed and ready to devour the town’s arts & culture offerings. The next stop on your adventure should without a doubt be the Martin Art Gallery on Magnolia Street for a glimpse at spectacular local art.

Shopping opportunities are also abundant, and if antiques are your passion then you will be in luck. At the corner of Oak Street and Polk Avenue you can find the old Arcadia Opera House, one of the largest collection of antiques in the town. Continue to mosey down Oak Street where you find an unbelievable range of shops and boutiques sure to fulfill your shopping dreams.

For more information on this destination, check out Thomas Becnel’s story Journey to Florida's Heartland: Arcadia and the Peace River Valley.

Best wishes!

End of the Year Culture Travel
Asked by Deb on July 09, 2008
Q: We're planning to visit Dec 26 to Jan 4. How can we find out what arts events are planned then? (Theater, Dance, Music) Thanks for your help and advice.
A:

Winter is a great time to visit Florida for a little sun, fun and culture! This web site is a great resource for you to begin your search for wonderful vacation activities. The region that you visit will of course influence the options that are available to you and your travel partners.

My personal picks for that timeframe include:

The Miccosukee Indian Arts Festival, located and hour east of Naples, is a wonderful event where you can purchase artwork created by Native American artisans, taste Native American cuisine, enjoy dance performances, catch the Miccosukee Patchwork Fashion Show and experience the Everglades on airboat rides and more. For information call (305) 223-8380

King Mango Strut, a light-hearted parody of the Orange Bowl parade down the streets Coconut Grove in Miami. Artists and locals design unbelievably creative floats and compete for top prizes. For more information check out their website.

Lastly, I’d recommend the Peace at Last Concert at Stephen Foster Culture Center State Park. Located along the banks of the Suwannee River in northern White Springs, the park hosts a New Years Eve celebration featuring a holiday bell concert and poetry readings. Check out the details here.

The best place to find out what’s going on in each region would be to check in with the city or county tourism entity or cultural arts council. Here’s a list of a few great places to start:

The Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau produces an amazing calendar of events for the South Florida region here.

The Palm Beach County Cultural Council also puts out a great calendar at their website here.

The Sarasota Convention & Visitors Bureau has a great offering as well here.

And of course stay tuned to my blog for more arts and culture updates and ideas. Best of luck with planning what already sounds like a wonderful vacation!
Central Eastern Coast Arts & Ghosts
Asked by John Dowell on July 07, 2008
Q: Can you recomend some "off the beaten path" arts and cultural places along the central eastern coast? Also, have you heard of any good ghost haunts in this area?
A:
Great question! You're in luck because Florida’s central eastern coast boasts a variety of unique arts offerings.

Take a day to explore the historic district of Eau Galie in Melbourne, located an hour’s drive east of Orlando. Within walking distance you can enjoy the district's many restaurants, museums, antique and art galleries. The Brevard Art Museum is one of the biggest draws here and offers a variety of contemporary art exhibitions and a Museum School that offers adult and children’s courses in figure drawing, sculpture and painting. With free admission on Thursdays, the Brevard is definitely worth a visit.

Nearby, the Florida Historical Society manages local treasure, the Historic Rossetter House Museum. This museum consists of the former home of colonial pioneer James Wadsworth Rossetter and accompanying gardens,  the William P. Roesch House, and the Houston Family Memorial Cemetery . An exhibition inside the Rossetter House displays antiques and interesting local history.

Further north you will find Daytona Beach, a city well known for its NASCAR races and surfing. Many don’t know that there’s also a thriving arts scene here. For a day of fun, check out the Halifax Historical Museum, Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse, and the Southeast Museum of Photography.

To satisfy the ghost hunter in you, stick around Daytona and check out the Daytona Beach Ghost Walk, Offering a haunting combination of science, history and folklore. Plus, proceeds from ticket sales go to support the Historic Cemetery and Preservation and Restoration project.
For more ghost ideas, check out this recent VISIT FLORIDA article called “True Tales of Florida Ghost Towns.”
Happy sightseeing!
