Experience Spain in St. Augustine
January 08, 2009
When one thinks of Spain, sangria, amazing architecture and flamenco dancing generally come to mind. But did you know that you don’t actually have to book an international flight to experience the best that the country has to offer?
For a Spanish holiday at a fraction of the cost, head over to St. Augustine.
Recently, ABC’s Good Morning America named Florida’s famed northeast city as the No. 1 location that people can go to have a European experience without breaking the bank. Founded in 1565 by the Spanish, the city is the oldest continually occupied European settlement in the country. The segment went on to say: “It feels like Old World Spain complete with cobblestone streets, courtyards and an old colonial quarter.”

A few attractions worth checking out include:

1.
Casa Monica Hotel– One of the premier attractions of the “nation’s oldest city," the hotel is a Moorish revival castle from 1888. Even the king and queen of Spain opted to stay there during a visit to the area. Recently restored in 1999, the Casa Monica Hotel blends a legendary past with contemporary pleasures overlooking Matanzas Bay.
2.    The Colonial Spanish Quarter Museum- At this living history museum visitors have a chance to experience how families lived, how they grew and cooked their food, and how they tended their livestock in the 18th century. Costumed performers add an authentic touch to illustrate the life of Spanish soldiers and their families in that era. Visitors also have the chance to observe tradesmen as they complete work in blacksmithing, carpentry, leatherworking, candlemaking and other trades.

3.    The Lightner Museum - This national historic landmark hosts a plentiful display of Victorian artifacts from the 19th century. Within the museum’s three floors, visitors will come across an interesting combination of costumes, music instruments and furniture from America's Gilded Age.
