At the midpoint of Fort Lauderdale and Naples lies the home of the Seminole Tribe of Florida.
From Feb. 27 through March 1, history buffs will have the chance to enjoy a major re-enactment of the Second Seminole War at the Big Cypress Shootout. Many don't know about the seven-year war between the United States government and the Seminole tribe that began in the 1830s, as national forces attempted to enforce a policy to remove Indians. With an astounding ratio of 2,000 native warriors against 52,000 American soldiers, the tribe was unconquered at the end of the fight.
The three-day event at the Billie Swamp Safari (comprising over 2000 acres of the Big Cypress Reservation) held in remembrance of this complicated period will include "music, Seminole food, Seminole and pioneer artisans, tomahawk throws, authentic Seminole and soldier camps, venomous snake shows and alligator wrestling."
What a perfect balance of history and culture! For more details call 1-800-GO-SAFARI or visit the website at www.semtribe.com/calendar. |
