Get-Together at the Jet-Together
March 06, 2008
Check out Florida Jets in Lakeland this weekend.   This “jet-together” bills itself as “Absolutely the largest gathering of radio control jets on the planet!” It’s not a competition, though it offers prizes for several best-of categories. Over 300 jet RCs and around 4,000 spectators will be at the event.

I met Gary Arthur and his friend Marc Thomson yesterday at Quest where they were practicing with their too-cool-toys. (I was flying my hang glider.) They drove all the way from Ontario with their RCs to join in the fun this weekend at Lakeland Linder Airport along with RC enthusiasts from all over the world.

Gary explained that radio controlled jets are considered the pinnacle of radio controlled flying. He said that they take a great deal of skill to control and fly. Some have enormous wingspans, as much as 14 to 16 feet.  Radio controlled jets are a passion for the guys and gals that fly them. The contraptions roar, they loop, they spin, and they roll. They crash sometimes, too – though hopefully not often, because they cost a boatload – from 5 to 30 thousand dollars and more.

Gary’s L-39 Jet is made in the Czech Republic, just like the real thing. Check it this sleek machine in the pictures—or better yet, buzz on over to Lakeland for a fascinating experience.
