Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales is an architectural masterpiece that was presented to the American people in gratitude for the opportunity Edward William Bok found here. Designed by famed architect Milton B. Medary with an elaborate sculpted stone façade created by Lee Lawrie of New York, the tower can be seen from miles around, acting like a beacon encouraging some 23 million visitors to its elaborate gardens since its opening.
Located on Lake Wales Ridge, a threatened ecosystem, the Tower’s meandering garden is considered one of the greatest achievements of famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. In its tranquil setting are expansive splashes of color interspersed with shady recesses, ponds and picturesque vistas.
Ferns, palms, oaks and pines create a year-round backdrop for the seasonal bursts of azaleas, camellias and magnolia blooms on this magnificent 250 acre site. This part of Florida is also one of its most diverse, and this habitat attracts a large variety of native birds, reptiles and butterflies. History of the Garden
Edward Bok was a naturalized American citizen, editor and Pulitzer Prize-winning author. He came to the United States at the age of six and was educated in the Brooklyn Public Schools. He continued his education at night while working as an office boy with the Western Union Telegraph Company.
Eventually he led The Ladies’ Home Journal to one of the most successful and influential publications in America. It was the first magazine in the world to have one million subscribers. After 30 years as editor, he retired in 1919 and then won the Gold Medal of the Academy of Political and Social Science and the Joseph Pulitzer Prize for best autobiography.
In addition to his professional achievements, Bok was a champion of social causes and a pioneer in promoting public sex education, prenatal education and childcare. He was also an environmental activist who was instrument in saving the Niagara Falls.
He discovered the site, located some 298 feet above sea level, and was awed by its dramatic sunsets and tranquility. According to the Gardens' website, Bok sought to create a place that would 'touch the soul with its beauty and quiet.'
Bok Tower Gardens was dedicated in early 1929 by President Calvin Coolidge. Mr. Bok died in Lake Wales within sight of the Tower on January 9, 1930, and is buried at its base.

My wife and I spend the winter near Lake Wales and have visited Bok Tower several times. It is a landmark that can be seen for several miles while hiking or biking.

We have visited Bok Tower several times - what a nice "calm-down" day after some theme park visits - gorgeous grounds, lovely winding paths...

I attended undergraduate studies at Warner University in Lake Wales in the late 70's. Bok tower was always a place of great respite during very difficult studies. A wonderful friend who has since passed away was in the office in the tower and I had the very rare pleasure to view the inside. It is astonishing! Listen quietly there and your soul too will be fed. I spent many hours there with my sister during a visit to Fla. The most enchanting grounds. The tower was unbelievable. Can't what to return.

When we visited the cafe we thought it was very reasonably priced and we had a lovely toasted sandwich/salad and the kids had some great fries too. I wouldn't hesitate to eat here again. Cambridge, England.

If you go for a visit EAT before you go the cafe food is over priced and of poor poor quality. I have sent soup back three times to have hot soup. Sandwiches are not much better. Cheese and tomatos are sliced very very thin.
