Historic St. Augustine celebrates the holidays with Nights of Lights, an illumination of grand order. In this, the oldest continuously occupied city in the United States, 2 million white lights create a magical effect.
Dozens of events are held throughout the city’s charming and narrow streets during this festival. Concerts, art walks encompassing twenty galleries, a dazzling regatta and many more festivities await winter visitors to this nearly 500-year-old city.
Florida’s balmy winter weather is perfect for a ride (and maybe a stolen kiss) on a romantic horse-drawn carriage. Or take off on the Holly Jolly Trolley Tour, which includes hot apple cider, home-baked cookies and magical glasses that enable additional visual treats.
An outdoor ice skating rink and an exhilarating ice slide provide thrills while storytellers in period costumes greet visitors throughout the historic downtown area.
While you’re in St. Augustine, attend one of the weapons firing demonstrations at Castillo San Marcos, which kept thousands of early Americans safe from marauders. These detailed formal reenactments are held numerous times each weekend and include both artillery and cannon fire as was practiced by the Spanish in the 1740s.
Ask one of the soldiers or rangers dressed in period costume to tell you about the various details of their uniforms for interesting insights into daily life long ago.
The Nights of Lights festivities last through the end of January. |
