Today we thank our veterans for the freedoms that we hold dear every day. None seems as valuable right now as the right to free speech, given the restrictions in Cuba, Tibet, Venezuela, Darfur and North Korea.
Opinions, ideas and thoughts are the heart of what makes each individual unique. The enduring value of freedom of expression is on view through Nov. 15 at the 26th annual Miami Book Fair International, the nation’s finest and largest literary gathering.
The mind-boggling array of authors inspires hundreds of thousands of people each year to travel to Miami. From Jacquelyn Mitchard, author of “The Deep End of the Ocean” – Oprah’s first book club pick – to Orhan Pamuk, winner of the Nobel Prize; to Jeff Lindsay of “Darkly Dreaming Dexter;” these provocative authors are a testament to our nation's freedom of speech.
Here is a full schedule of the author readings, book signings, the beloved “Evenings With” series, the IberoAmerican Authors program and the ever-popular Street Fair on the weekend of Nov. 13-15.
During the Street Fair, Downtown Miami's streets are closed off. I love to wander through the 250 booths of publishers and booksellers that exhibit here. This year, I’m going to the antiquarians for signed first editions as holiday presents.
The Comix Galaxy returns with an educational program on Friday, a new section just for kids and teens, and renowned graphic novelists and illustrators in attendance.
Families enjoy the entertainment area and Children’s Alley. There is always an abundance of delicious food for sale, too.
The Miami Book Fair is a collaboration presented by the Florida Center for the Literary Arts at Miami Dade College and a dedicated team led by co-founder and chair, Mitchell Kaplan of Books & Books, one of the United States' leading independent bookstores.
Our thanks to them along with our veterans. |
