In Wewahitchka, located in north-central Florida, oak trees drip moss and oysters are a mainstay. And yet, there are two other celebrated delicacies: catfish and tupelo honey.
Many of us learned about tupelo honey in “Ulee’s Gold,” a Hollywood blockbuster.
We’ll have to meet up in Wewahitchka, more affectionately known as “Wewa,” to enjoy the Catfish Festival, which is scheduled this year on Sept. 25.
A fun event that features live music, an arts and crafts fair, food and activities for the kids, the Catfish Festival also includes the Florida Catfish Classic 2009 Fishing Tournament. Prizes totaling $50,000 are offered!
Fishing is both a serious vocation and a serious avocation in these parts, and the unspoiled and abundant catches are legendary. Here are a guide to the fishing and another guide to the yummy dining in the vicinity. As to the catfish, North Florida has plentiful species, too.

By the way, here's a great article about what makes tupelo honey so extraordinary.
See ya in Wewa! |
