How do Cubans throw a picnic? Simple.
Find some dominoes. Add roast pork complete with lots of yuca, plantains and congrís (another name for rice and beans mixed together). Finish with café Cubano and professional cigar rollers to recreate the Havana scene.
All this and more will take place at the first ever Cuban Heritage Festival in Marathon on Aug. 30, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Find the festival at Marathon Community Park, located on the Gulf side of Mile Marker 49.
Several contests are on the agenda. A cooking contest will show off tasty Cuban dishes, to be followed by a salsa contest to work off all those carbs. Then the judges will select a young miss to be Ms. Cuban Heritage Festival.
Cubans are particularly well known for their family-oriented events. At this one, two professional babysitters will be available to watch the kids so parents can concentrate on their domino (or dance) moves.
And while you’re down in Marathon, you might want to check into the Rainbow Bend Resort, a slice of old Florida. Or find the perfect spot on the water with help from the folks at Abyss Dive Center or Sea Squared Charters. There's more information about Marathon in this video with historical perspective.
Rumba on down with me to Marathon this weekend so we can share some café con leche.
¡Buen provecho! To your good health! |
