The elegant city of DeLand will celebrate its annual Day in Florida History on August 1 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at DeLeon Springs State Park with a Seminole War reenactment, music, period crafts and more.
The reenactment is a tale of an early 1800s skirmish between soldiers and settlers and Seminole Indians, complete with actual weapons of the period, an authentic Indian village and soldier's encampment. The period comes alive with artisans and performances of Native American dances which the audience is encouraged to join.
DeLeon Springs State Park offers a 50-minute eco/history boat tour that departs every hour from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. You’ll see alligators, bald eagles and many species of wading birds. Reservations are suggested. Many people enjoy swimming in the natural spring. At 72 degrees Fahrenheit, it is certainly refreshing.
DeLeon Springs is the entry point to Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge with 18,000 acres of lakes, creeks and marshes. Canoe and paddleboat rentals and snacks are available at the park concession to help you explore its beauty. Or you can hike the four-mile Wild Persimmon Trail, which meanders through oak hammock, flood plain forest and abandoned agricultural fields. Birding is excellent, and deer, turkey and Florida black bears have been spotted. Hikers are asked to register at the ranger station.
