The Indian River Flute Circle, Native Heritage Gathering, Inc. and the Brevard County Parks & Recreation Department will offer a Native American music festival at the Wickham Park amphitheater the weekend of November 13-15, 2009. This event celebrates the culture and heritage of the indigenous peoples of North American through appreciation for the music of the Native American flute and drums. Seniors Horsin’ Around Camp is taking place at the Florida Carriage Museum and Resort on November 17th and 18th, 2009, just five minutes east of The Villages. If you are past your teenage years, you qualify for this fun-filled experience! Although the camp focuses on horses, no prior horse experience is necessary. Archaeologists and Park Staff present a moon-lit tour and interpretation of the famous Crystal River Archaeological Site The Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Friends of Crystal River State Parks is hosting Moon Over the Mounds. This event is scheduled for Friday: October 2, October 30, December 4, 2009 and January 1, 2010 from 8 to 10 pm at the Crystal River Archaeological State Park in Citrus County. (February and March dates to be announced.) The Crystal River Archaeological Site is a world-famous pre-Columbian mound complex extending along the north shore of the Crystal River. The site is one of the most imposing prehistoric ceremonial centers on Florida’s west coast. The Moon Over the Mounds tour this season will begin at the Park Museum at 8:00 PM. Interpretive guides tell the story of the famous Crystal River Site by torchlight as guests tour though the moon-lit mound complex. Travel back with us to AD 600 when the CrystalRiversite was the most important ceremonial site in the region! The park is located at 3400 North Museum Point, CrystalRiverjust north of the Crystal River Mall. The Tampa Bay Black Heritage Festival (TBBHF) is a ten-day cultural event that features speakers, musicians, artists, poets and craftspeople locally and nationally. The festival begins the weekend before and ends the weekend after the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday to promote diversity and cultural sensitivity. Activities are geared towards children and adults. Each day of this ten-day experience provides all attendees with an opportunity to increase their awareness of African and African-American culture and history. The festival has two main components: (1) Cultural Enrichment activities including "A Living History," which is comprised of several media, film, exhibit and persons who were directly involved in a historically significant event in the history of the United States; social empowerment speakers who have had experience on the world stage dealing with issues important to the African Diaspora, and events that highlight diversity in entertainment which include music, spoken word, art and more. Inside the small town of Zolfo Springs in march each year, a grand event occurs, the Annual Pioneer Park Days. Pioneer Park Days is one of the largest, and is the oldest, antique tractor, steam engine and farm equipment shows in the southeast. Some of the highlights include over 400 exhibits of tractors, hit and miss steam engines and farm equipment. The noted Florida Frontiersmen conduct daily demonstrations on Pioneer living at its best. Activities include dutch oven cooking, wood burning, basket weaving, pioneer toys, how to make and play a native American flute, and other 1800’s era activities. The flea market area has 491 flea market booths that sell items from old tools to arts and crafts. Great deals to be had. Each day at 2:00 p.m. the antique tractors host a tractor parade around the outside perimeter of the park. In the Nickerson/Ullrich building daily entertainment is scheduled. Country Music, bluegrass music, and cloggers just to name a few. All this family entertainment and taking a stroll down memory lane for a cost of $2.00 daily admission or $5.00 for the weekly pass.
