Archaeologists and Park Staff present a moon-lit tour and interpretation of the famous Crystal River Archaeological Site The Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Friends of Crystal River State Parks is hosting Moon Over the Mounds. This event is scheduled for Friday: October 2, October 30, December 4, 2009 and January 1, 2010 from 8 to 10 pm at the Crystal River Archaeological State Park in Citrus County. (February and March dates to be announced.) The Crystal River Archaeological Site is a world-famous pre-Columbian mound complex extending along the north shore of the Crystal River. The site is one of the most imposing prehistoric ceremonial centers on Florida’s west coast. The Moon Over the Mounds tour this season will begin at the Park Museum at 8:00 PM. The Tampa Bay Black Heritage Festival (TBBHF) is a ten-day cultural event that features speakers, musicians, artists, poets and craftspeople locally and nationally. The festival begins the weekend before and ends the weekend after the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday to promote diversity and cultural sensitivity. Activities are geared towards children and adults. Inside the small town of Zolfo Springs in march each year, a grand event occurs, the Annual Pioneer Park Days. Pioneer Park Days is one of the largest, and is the oldest, antique tractor, steam engine and farm equipment shows in the southeast. Some of the highlights include over 400 exhibits of tractors, hit and miss steam engines and farm equipment. The noted Florida Frontiersmen conduct daily demonstrations on Pioneer living at its best. Activities include dutch oven cooking, wood burning, basket weaving, pioneer toys, how to make and play a native American flute, and other 1800’s era activities.
