Art, Media and Material Witness explores the relationships between artists and the historical, political and social challenges of their time. The exhibition proposes the artist as a material witness, defined as “a witness whose testimony is both relevant to the matter at issue and required in order to resolve the matter.” Questions that emerge include: What are the forms of artistic testimony? What is the significance of art in society’s discourse? Is art essential? What can art resolve? Can art change the way we think of or imagine our world? Twenty five artists from Africa, Latin America and the United States engage with these important issues through a variety of media. The exhibition features several new acquisitions and important loans. Each featured work gives compelling testimony about the issues and conditions of its unique time and place in the world. Some challenge political circumstances through irony and humor and question the potential of utopian aspirations. Throughout the nineteenth century American artist-explorers braved many hardships to reach and document some of the most remarkable terrain, flora, and fauna in the world. Their views of jungles, erupting volcanoes, ancient archeology, and exotic species from Central and South America and Florida stimulated interest in travel to the New World Tropics, and incited a passion for exotic species such as orchids and hummingbirds. This exhibition includes rare paintings, drawings, prints, and illustrated books created by intrepid artist-explorers such as Frederick Catherwood, George Catlin, Frederic Edwin Church, Martin Johnson Heade, George Inness, Louis Mignot, Thomas Moran, William Aiken Walker, and Laura Woodward. While some artist-explorers were motivated by a romantic desire for escape from civilization, many were true scientists, inspired to travel to the tropics by the recently published work of Alexander von Humboldt and Charles Darwin. The exhibition juxtaposes examples of romantic, soulful representations of tropical landscape by artists such as -moreMignot, Moran, Inness, and Woodward, with more scientifically motivated works by Catlin, Church, Heade, Catherwood, and Walker. February 7 – May 9, 2010 Project Europa considers the relationship of art to democracy in Europe. In 1989, the expansion and unification of Europe was conceived as a vital and urgent social project to promote democracy and sustain cultural difference. Now in the 20th anniversary year of the fall of the Berlin Wall, artists in the exhibition question the promise and potential of Europe’s democratic dream. The works featured in the exhibition, which include large-scale wall paintings, photography and video by 20 artists from Turkey to the British Isles, explore the complex and subtle relationship between art and politics. At the same time, the reflection on Europe provides an opportunity for American audiences to re-consider and reinvigorate our understanding of democracy at home. The exhibition is organized by the Harn Museum of Art and made possible by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts; the C. Frederick and Aase B. The von Liebig Art Center is excited to present a collection of the late Princess Diana’s gowns, shoes, handbags and memorabilia, including many dresses purchased at the Christie’s auction just weeks before Diana’s untimely death. At least two of the dresses and some of the memorabilia have never been exhibited in the United States. This professionally-curated exhibition of the “world’s most photographed woman,” created just for The von Liebig Art Center, honors the historical importance of her journey from royal princess to humanitarian by telling a story through the dresses worn by the late Princess to commemorative, social and charitable functions. Dedicated to continuing the model of “using beautiful things to do beautiful things” as personified by the late Princess Diana’s sale of her personal “treasures” for distribution to charities, a portion of the ticket sales from this exhibition will be donated the Pink Ribbon Crusade, which supports women with breast cancer, for distribution to local women with breast cancer.
