The most significant producers of Arts and Crafts furniture and metalware will be represented, including works by Gustav Stickley and his Craftsman Workshops, Elbert Hubbard and the Roycrofters, the Byrdcliffe Arts and Crafts Colony, Dirk van Erpp, Arthur Wesley Dow and his followers, the Grueby Faience Co., Marblehead Potteries, Newcomb Pottery, Paul Revere Pottery, Rookwood Pottery, and Van Briggle Pottery. Pre-register for each full series of 4 sessions for $54 ($18 savings). 1-3PM This personalized and custom-made photo memory quilt allows you to transfer up to 5 photos, each surrounded by bold patches of color. Create a picture gallery to commemorate your childhood, a favorite event, or show off your friends and family. Each quilt has a decorative border added for easy hanging, and photos will be sized and trimmed to fit within the squares. Throughout the nineteenth century American artist-explorers braved many hardships to reach and document some of the most remarkable terrain, flora, and fauna in the world. Their views of jungles, erupting volcanoes, ancient archeology, and exotic species from Central and South America and Florida stimulated interest in travel to the New World Tropics, and incited a passion for exotic species such as orchids and hummingbirds. This exhibition includes rare paintings, drawings, prints, and illustrated books created by intrepid artist-explorers such as Frederick Catherwood, George Catlin, Frederic Edwin Church, Martin Johnson Heade, George Inness, Louis Mignot, Thomas Moran, William Aiken Walker, and Laura Woodward. While some artist-explorers were motivated by a romantic desire for escape from civilization, many were true scientists, inspired to travel to the tropics by the recently published work of Alexander von Humboldt and Charles Darwin. The exhibition juxtaposes examples of romantic, soulful representations of tropical landscape by artists such as -moreMignot, Moran, Inness, and Woodward, with more scientifically motivated works by Catlin, Church, Heade, Catherwood, and Walker. During the late 19th century, when men were supposed to be men at home, at work, or at war, visionary entrepreneur Fred Thompson developed a playground to “let ‘em be kids.” Amid shifting conceptions of gender, race, and class, Thompson built Luna Park in 1903 and transformed Coney Island from a tawdry “Sodom by the Sea” into a respectable adult playground. His ambition and vision created the first theme park. The 25th Annual Whitehall Lecture Series brings experts and best-selling authors to discuss the colorful history of popular entertainment during the Gilded Age.
