Art, Media and Material Witness explores the relationships between artists and the historical, political and social challenges of their time. The exhibition proposes the artist as a material witness, defined as “a witness whose testimony is both relevant to the matter at issue and required in order to resolve the matter.” Questions that emerge include: What are the forms of artistic testimony? What is the significance of art in society’s discourse? Is art essential? What can art resolve? Can art change the way we think of or imagine our world? Twenty five artists from Africa, Latin America and the United States engage with these important issues through a variety of media. The exhibition features several new acquisitions and important loans. Each featured work gives compelling testimony about the issues and conditions of its unique time and place in the world. Some challenge political circumstances through irony and humor and question the potential of utopian aspirations. Brought together as a group, the works suggest the rich diversity of the last quarter century of photography. Portfolios of artists who have been brought together because of their shared support of a specific social cause or political issue are especially interesting examples of the merger of artistic expression with charity, politics and the art market. Of special note is the Harn’s new acquisition of the portfolio By and About Women. The 10 contributing female artists made images about women, and some images feature women at the Lotus House, a shelter for homeless women in Miami. The annual Festival of the Arts provides a friendly setting for artists and craftsman to show and sell their works. A variety of food and beverages will be available throughout the event. Located at the Courthouse Square in Downtown Inverness. Parking and admission are FREE! This annual event will again feature over 100 artists, who will be displaying a wide variety of artistic creations, including fine arts as well as hobbies and crafts. The exhibitors’ booths are set up around the courthouse square and there will be a special area for artists from local schools. The “Zone” will feature students from the county elementary, middle and high schools and will include children’s activities. Food vendors will also be on site to provide refreshments and a place for shoppers to relax. The Festival of the Arts Committee sponsors this fun event each year, along with the City of Inverness and the Citrus County Chronicle. This enjoyable event is produced each year as a community service and a means to promote the arts. The 2008 Best in Division winner Dan Balk has donated a one of a kind handmade fine art jewelry pendant for this year’s scholarship drawing.
