Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve protects 73,352 acres of living laboratory south of Jacksonville on the northeast coast of Florida, one of the fastest growing regions in the state. Visitors to this working research facility can soak in Florida's natural environment on beaches and 10 miles of nature trails for walking, hiking and horseback riding — or get a glimpse of the science behind the scenes at the environmental education center. "In some areas we have dunes that reach up to 40 feet high," says spokeswoman Emily Jane Murray, "and not a house in sight."
