Fort Mose (pronounced Mo-ZAY) is the first place where Africans, who escaped slavery in British colonies, lived as free people in what would eventually become the United States. A few decades after being unearthed by archaeologists, Fort Mose Historic State Park, just north of St. Augustine, offers an interactive museum, historical reenactments and beautiful surroundings.
