overview

Description:

About 7 miles of designated nature trails can be explored by hikers and those interested in nature study.  Not so long ago, six Florida champion trees - the very largest of their species in the state - grew in the surrounding forest.  The persimmon, Florida maple, bluff oak, river birch, Florida basswood and winged elm have since died of disease or old age, or yielded their titles to champions discovered elsewhere in the state.  Some trails are named for these tree varieties and many large specimens still stand in the forest. The mature hardwood forest of Andrews is home to a variety of birds and mammals and the Suwannee River basin is a major route for many species of migrating birds.
