Florida 7th Graders Create Nature Book for iPad

There's a fun an informative book out on iTunes about Florida nature. It's geared towards kids, but you might be surprised to know that it was also created by kids!

With the help of their teacher, a group of seventh graders at Woodlawn Beach Middle School in Gulf Breeze created "Creatures, Plants and More! A Kids Guide to Northwest Florida." The interactive book, which was published in April, has had over 3,600 downloads already.

"We hit No.1 for two and a half months straight," said teacher Andrea Santilli, who led the book project as a way to teach her students about nature and the environment.

"It was a great experience for the kids," she said. "It got them out and they got to learn more about what's around them."

The book is also helpful for people elsewhere in Florida, because many of the species are found in other parts of the state.

Santilli and her students have been enjoying the success of this project, and she would like to do another book.

"My goal is to try and get more teachers involved in having their students produce more digitally," she said. "You've got to change the way you teach to get the kids excited about learning."

Be sure and download the book on iTunes at http://itunes.apple.com/us/book/creatures-plants-and-more!/id521854684?mt=11. The book is free, available only for iPad and contains 133 pages.
