Three Great Adventures on CR 33

ADD TO FAVORITES

Highway 50 slices a path across Florida’s midsection, and about 20 miles after it clears downtown Orlando you’ll reach rural County Road 33 near Groveland.

If you head north on this quiet road you may hear people screaming with delight. Why? Because there are some cool adventures here that can add a surge of adrenaline to your day.

One of my favorites is the Seminole-Lake Gliderport, an airstrip in the middle of the country where you can climb into a sailplane for a motor-free soaring adventure. The first time I did it I was petrified when I pulled the knob to release us from the tow plane. As the tow plane’s engine noise faded away, I was spooked by the sheer silence that surrounded us. I got even more shaky when the pilot asked me if I wanted to take the controls. Nervous at first, once I did and learned how to choose where we would fly, I was hooked (and later signed up for lessons).

Down the road at Quest Air Hang Gliding, the experience is nearly the same although in a hang glider you’re not enclosed – you and the pilot are slung beneath a huge kite. For me, the sensation was similar to riding a motorcycle in the sky; you can fly anywhere you want and you are completely exposed to your surroundings. The best part was when the pilot asked me if I wanted to steer. Of course – and I loved it!

Further down CR 33 you’ll discover Revolution: The Off Road Experience. If you ever wondered how much fun it would be to ride an ATV through the countryside or navigate some tight turns and moguls, then this is the place to be. In addition to the ATVs, they have dune buggies, and it’s a real blast to step on the throttle and feel your pulse rising as fast as the speedometer. If you’d like to see what it’s like, watch the video I shot there.

Check out this trio of adventures. You’ll find them off the beaten path on County Road 33 in Central Florida.
