As the weather continues to warm up, the desire to get out to the beach becomes stronger. Why not take in a little nature while you're at it?
The Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary, which says it's the largest bird hospital and sanctuary in the U.S., is located in Indian Shores on the west coast of Florida. The sanctuary is located right on the beach, and you can expect to see in excess of 600 wild birds, such as Northern Gannets and Black Skimmers. Right now they have dozens of the ever-popular baby pelicans on site. The hospital's staff recently announced that the end of March is the beginning of baby bird season, so this is a great month to check things out.
The sanctuary is open from 9 a.m. to sunset 365 days a year, and admission is free. They also have a gift shop that's open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., except for on major holidays.
If you're a bird lover and want to help out the sanctuary and hospital, they are in need of supplies and accept donations of various items – a list is available on their website. For more information, visit www.seabirdsanctuary.com.
