Fresh goat cheese, pickled green beans, jams and salsas. I love exploring local farmers' markets with my boys. We've visited some fantastic markets traveling around Florida, so I was shocked when my sister made me aware of one in my own neighborhood.
The Homestead Harvest Market & Café features sustainable, organic local products, one block from the Homestead Air Reserve Base. They’ve got big plans to develop an adjacent 22-acre permaculture farm, which will include livestock such as goats (to produce fresh cheeses) and regular farm tours. Right now, their permanent, open-air building houses their new café and bins and jars of local, organic goodies. Hours are 2-6 p.m. Fridays and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays.
Their Natural Farmers Day Fest is Saturday, July 28, 2012, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. You can celebrate natural health and wellness with live music, farm tours, locally grown food and produce, and demonstrations and hands-on activities perfect for the whole family.
The Homestead Harvest Market/The Farm at Verde Gardens is at 12690 SW 280 St. (on the corner of SW 280 Street and 127th Avenue). For more information, call 786-548-3733 or email Market Manager Martha Fernandez. I hope to see you there.
