Folks, the Van Fleet State Trail ranks up there as one of my favorite wildlife bike rides. Deer, gators, sandhill cranes – you name it. I've ridden the Van Fleet trail several times, and it's always a blast.
The northern terminus for the Van Fleet State Trail is on SR 50 in Mabel, and terminates 29.2 miles to the south in Polk City on SR 33. The trail slices through the Green Swamp, another favorite for hiking and trail riding. This bike ride is pretty remote in some places, so make sure you have plenty of water and all the basic gear needed for repairs. Oh, and make sure to bring along your camera, you are sure to see some cool stuff along the way.
Ready to ride? There's detailed information on the Van Fleet trail on the trails section of VISITFLORIDA.com, and make sure to check out the video clip of the pod of alligators, which I got a couple of years ago near Green Pond. Have fun!
