Horse lovers, pay attention! I have an excursion to tell you about! It’s the Scenic Country Carriage Ride from Ocala Carriage and Tours.
Ocala is "The Horse Capital of the World," and it’s here that you’ll enjoy seeing some of the finest horse farms - by horse drawn carriage or trolley wagon. Drooling yet?
Your carriage, led by mighty Percheron Draft Horses, will travel along a country road, under shady oak trees and past several thoroughbred farms, as well as quarter horse and Arabian farms. You'll get to see these beautiful creatures in their natural environment.
These down-home tours are fully narrated and so interesting. You’ll learn about some of the famous horses that have been trained or bred here and how Ocala became The Horse Capital of the World. Many times, the horses that you’ll pass will want to come over to say hello to your Percherons, so have your camera ready (and you can pat and greet them, too).
The Country Carriage Ride is a little over an hour long and is by reservation only. A credit card is required for reservations. The first tour goes out around 9 a.m. and they go until around 6 p.m., seven days a week. This is great for a romantic day out or a family adventure.
The carriage tour is $75.00 for two people, $95.00 for three or four, and $125 for five to six folks. Groups of seven or more will ride in their trolley wagon pulled by two draft horses and the cost is $25.00 per person.
Have 10 or more people? You’re in luck! They’ll provide BBQ lunch or dinner - chicken & ribs with fixings for $14.00 per person. (Fixings include beans, coleslaw, potato salad, biscuits, ice tea or lemonade, and dessert.) So get a group together (call me!) and giddy up for some big time fun.
One more tour they offer is to visit the world's largest breed of horses, the English Shire. You’ll be taken by a tractor-pulled wagon throughout the 100-acre farm of the New England Shire Centre, where you can interact with this gentle breed. The tour is about 90 minutes and the cost is only $25 per person. Reservations required.
