Pitcher Plants Blooming at Pensacola's Tarkiln Bayou State Park

Now, this is something that I've been wanting to see in person for a long time, and I finally got a chance on my recent visit to Pensacola - rare white-topped pitcher plants in bloom!

There are very few places in Florida to see these plants, and one of the best and most accessible locations is at Tarkiln Bayou Preserve State Park in Pensacola. Pitcher plants are carnivorous, luring their prey into the pitcher using a combination of fragrance, nectar, and bright colors. The prey, usually a fly or something similar, falls into the pitcher where it becomes a hearty lunch for the plant! Here's a video of the pitcher plants in action - don't worry, no flies were harmed in the making of this film. They all flew away to safety -- this time.
