Trail Tuesday: Kayak the Chassahowitzka River
First off, just call it the "Chazz." You'll hear lots of different pronunciations of the Chassahowitzka River (say it with me: Chass-a-wiz-ka), so most folks just save themselves a lot of trouble and go with the shortened version. Either way, folks along Florida's Nature Coast in Citrus County will know what you're after.
I've paddled the Chazz tons of times, but this is one of those trips worth doing time and time again. You can paddle the river to the Gulf of Mexico, or a popular springs-hopping day trip is about seven miles total. From the launch, take a right and check out Seven Sisters (keep your eyes peeled for manatees, too), or head straight downriver to runs that lead out to Baird, Potters, Little and Big Salt, or the Crack. That's just a few of the scenic side trips along the Chazz.
See what I mean? This river will have you coming back all year long.
Entry to the Chassahowitzka River is located south of Homosassa at 8600 West Miss Maggie Drive. Rentals are available from Nature Coast Outpost, which is right at the boat ramp. There's a $5 parking fee. For more information, including details about camping, visit www.chassahowitzkaflorida.com.
