Palencia in St. Augustine: a Sublime Golf Affair
By Tim McDonald
You almost expect to hear trumpets when you pull up to the Palencia Club. The clubhouse is a majestic affair, overlooking the serene waters to the left of the ninth fairway and green.
The golf itself matches the anticipation you feel when you see the clubhouse. In a word, it's sublime, some of the best golf in the state of Florida.
Conditioning is superb throughout, as you would expect from a private club with Palencia's reputation, and the layout is always imaginative, always thoughtful and challenging.
Arthur Hills is Palencia's architect, and his elegant design just flows throughout the 18 holes, including gnarled, 100-year-old oaks and glimpses of the marsh and the Intracoastal Waterway.
It's a natural piece of golf art in a beautiful setting, with challenging golf and great service. Is there anything else you'd like, sir?
