Taking a houseboat down the St. John's River.

Off the Beaten Path: Rent a Houseboat on the St. Johns River

    By Gary McKechnie

The days of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn might have passed, but you can still have a river adventure of your own — in considerably more comfort than you'd have on an open river raft. Rent a houseboat for the day, weekend or week, get a little training in how to operate it and set off on the St. Johns River all on your own. Find a nice spot and tie up on the bank for a little swimming, fishing or a cookout. "Sitting at the steering wheel … seeing the bend of the river ahead, not knowing what's beyond it," says writer Gary McKechnie, "that's what life is all about."
