Developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1936 and opened to the public in 1938, the 2,990-acre park provides camping, picnicking, canoeing and swimming. Approximately eight miles of nature trails allow visitors to wander through hammocks of live oaks, sabal palms, magnolias and hickory trees bordering the Hillsborough River. Fort Foster State Historic Site is located within the park. Living history program shows fort personnel carrying out their duties in the year 1837.
