Treasure. Pirates. Silver Coins. Slave Ships. The Mel Fisher Maritime Museum is known for sound archaeology, excellent research, and fine-tuned exhibitions. Its beginnings are immersed in adventure and intrigue as its founder and namesake, Mel Fisher, spent a lifetime searching for treasures hidden off the Florida reef. His search resulted not only in the discovery of the Atocha shipwreck treasure, but in a new understanding of Florida’s history and the science of shipwrecks. Today, the museum is the official maritime museum of the Florida Keys and Monroe County. It has earned the distinction of full accreditation with the prestigious American Association of Museums (AAM), and it has the highest attendance of any history museum in the state.
