Separated from the mainland by Charlotte Harbor and Pine Island Sound, this island is part of a chain of Gulf Coast barrier islands. The centerpiece of Gasparilla is the restored Boca Grande Lighthouse built in 1890. Swimming, snorkeling, fishing, and nature study are popular activities. This island is a seasonal host for many of the nation's most prominent fishermen, as well as some of the most prominent families in the country. They come to fish for tarpon in Boca Grande pass, which separates Gasparilla and Cayo Costa islands. Each spring these giant fish, known also as "silver kings" migrate into the deep water pass, also known as the "Tarpon Capital of the World." Also located in the park is the Boca Grande Lighthouse Museum.
