overview

Description:

Amelia Island is the Florida beach with a Southern accent. Located in the northeastern tip of Florida and within the chain of Sea Islands, Amelia Island offers pristine nature and uncrowded beaches. A timeless destination with the backdrop of a rich history, it also features the best in modern amenities, with world-class golf, spas and restaurants. Consistently named amongst the Top 10 North American islands by Conde Nast Traveler's Reader's Choice Awards for six consecutive years, there's something for everyone—a family vacation, a romantic getaway, a beachside horseback ride or kayak excursion. Events include the Amelia Concours d'Elegance, Pétanque America Open and Isle of 8 Flags Shrimp Festival. With thirteen miles of uninterrupted beaches, the northern and southern tips of the island are park preserves, which make up nearly 10 percent of the entire island. Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, Intracoastal waterway, Nassau Sound and one of the East's largest and deepest inlets - Cumberland Sound - Amelia Island is edged with natural Appalachian quartz beaches and framed by sand dunes as high as 40 feet. From upscale resorts and charming bed and breakfast inns, to comfortable hotels at value rates, Amelia Island offers accommodations for everyone. With more than 20 places to stay and more than 2,500 rooms, visitors are able to choose properties located directly along the Atlantic Ocean, within walking distance of the historic district and much more. For the adventurous traveler, Amelia Island offers kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, fishing charters and campaign. After a busy day, visitors can settle in for a cozy, horse-drawn carriage ride through historic downtown Fernandina Beach, or a sunset sail down the Amelia River. Children will enjoy swimming, fishing, full-facility camping, and more. 117 holes of golf offer several oceanside greens with spectacular views. Shop local boutiques in the historic district, at the resorts, or at the specialty stores scattered throughout the island. For history buffs, visit Fort Clinch (one of the most well-preserved 19th century forts in the country offering extensive bike paths and nearby, the largest sand dunes in Florida), take in the protected architecture of historic downtown, or visit the Amelia Museum of History. Be sure to visit the newly-reopened Welcome Center, housed in the architecturally significant old train depot, located at the foot of Centre Street.
