Highlands County encompasses 1,029 square miles of the state’s heartland and 78 square miles of water in the center of Florida’s peninsula. Highlands appropriately describes the higher elevation of the area located on the rolling hills of the Lake Wales Ridge in the heart of Central Florida, a unique geological feature that runs for about 150 miles north to south through Lake, Orange, Osceola, Polk and Highlands counties.
