The Jenks House, built in 1925, is a fine example of the Prairie school of architecture popularized by Frank Lloyd Wright. In 2007 The Jenks House was a featured home on the 2007 Riverside Avondale Preservation Tour of Homes. The house abounds in warm heart of pine woodwork and oak floors. The bathroom walls are replete with the original white subway tiles, many now crazed from age. The house is furnished with Mission and Art Deco furniture with several pieces having belonged to the original owners, Marjorie and Thomas Jenks. In 2007 it became only the 2nd b&b to be state certified by the Florida Green Lodging Program. It is still the only such recognized b&b in Jacksonville. The solar water heater, installed in 1978, provides more than 90% of the hot water needs. A recent green addition is the 1,375 gal. rainwater cistern. Collecting rainwater off the roofs of two buildings, this system provides almost all the water used in our organic garden and six citrus trees. Speaking of food, The Jenks House is noted for its tasty breakfasts. In addition to Ila Rae's creative entrees, where else will you enjoy juice from Florida oranges squeezed just 10 minutes ago? In season the oranges come right off our organically grown trees (from the tree to thee in under 30!) How about fair trade coffee that Tom roasted the previous night? The Jenks House is a totally smoke free bed and breakfast. Marvelous food, beautiful surroundings and warm, caring hosts...your stay at The Jenks House will truly be memorable!
