overview

Description:

The Green Mountain Scenic Byway is a microcosm of Central Florida that is itself becoming rare and endangered – rolling hills, (yes, Florida does have hills), small towns and rural communities, and stately and historic buildings with moss draped live oaks shading the roadway. The Green Mountain Scenic Byway is located in east Lake County and west Orange County in Central Florida, along the western and southern shores of Lake Apopka. Travelling from the north, the Scenic Byway begins at the intersection of Lake County Roads 455 and 561 and winds south along County Road 455 through some of the highest hills of peninsular Florida. The Byway passes through the rural community of Ferndale and the small Town of Montverde, and bisects the scenic campus of the Montverde Academy. At the intersection of County Road 455, the Scenic Byway runs east on Old Highway 50 (which becomes Oakland Avenue at the Orange and Lake County Line) through the historic and scenic Town of Oakland. A short spur on Tubb Street in Oakland takes the traveler to the Oakland Town Center round-a-bout and then back to the Byway. The Scenic Byway passes beneath the historic moss covered Sadler Oaks in the community of Tildenville and ends at the intersection of Oakland Avenue and Orange County Road 545. The Green Mountain Scenic Byway is one of the most heavily used routes in Florida for bicyclists and motorcyclists, and is very popular with car clubs and Sunday drivers. The Byway is an international destination for touring and competitive cyclists, who come to train and race on the road’s curves and hills. The Byway parallels sections of the West Orange and South Lake Bicycle and Pedestrian Trails. The Killarney Station Trailhead provides bicycle rentals and repairs, parking and restrooms. The 128 acre Oakland Nature Preserve boasts a 3100 foot long boardwalk which winds through forested wetlands to a covered pavilion on Lake Apopka. The preserve is a favorite with bird watchers and is a destination on the Great Florida Birding Trail.
