The Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve is 110,000 acres of pristine mangrove forests, uplands and protected waters on the western edge of the Everglades. Where rivers and streams meet the sea, a unique habitat is formed. A myriad of wildlife, including 150 species of birds and many threatened and endangered animals, thrive in the estuarine environment and surrounding upland hammocks and scrub found within the Reserve. The reserve operates an Environmental Learning Center for the public that features aquariums, interactive exhibits, children's exhibits, marine touch tank, live animals, nature trails with observation platforms over Henderson Creek, guided kayak trips, art gallery, lunch and evening lecture series, gift shop, picnic areas, special events and more. Art Class: Painting in Acrylics

Join renown Lee Hammond, Rookery Bay Reserve’s Artist in Residence, for an art program this summer and explore the magic of drawing and painting. Hammond has been a professional artist and art instructor for more than 30 years. She has published more than 35 art instruction books. Learn more about her amazing talent here. On Wednesday’s in June, Lee will teach painting in acrylics. This is a non-structured class as well, and each student will work on their own chosen piece. No experience is required. This class covers the essentials of your digital camera. You will learn how to use your camera's shutter, aperture, ISO control and the drive modes to create images with impact and creativity. No previous camera or photography experience is necessary, just a desire to learn. Sonny Saunders has over 35 years of experience in photography and instruction and is renowned for his ability to communicate to a wide variety of students.


Gallery Opening Reception

The Friends of Rookery Bay and the United Arts Council of Collier County present the exhibition: Summer I: Fabric from May 23 through September 7, with works submitted by local artists Muffy Clark Gill, Leigh Herndon, and Natalie Guess. The Opening Reception will feature wine and light hors d’oeuvres. Admission is $3 for the public and free for participating artists and their guest as well as members of the United Arts Council and the Friends of Rookery Bay.


Collage on Canvas Workshop

Local artist Marjorie Pesek will lead this 3-hour workshop for adults of all levels of creative talent. She will share her unique art technique of Layered Imagery. Participants will be supplied with a sketch on a 9" x 12" stretched canvas, a template of the subject, glue, scissors, and magazines. Marjorie will work with you to create a masterpiece you can take home! Additional kits available for purchase in the nature store. See examples on Marjorie's website by clicking here.
