Exhibits by Artists Steve Tobin, Karl Zerbe, and Samuel Blatt at the MOA-DeLand

Now - October 24, 2014
Steve Tobin: Roots Appearing in the Lower Galleries at 600 N. Woodland Blvd. Monumental steel outdoor sculptures and smaller glass works in the lower galleries, including a glass installation, will be on exhibit. Tobin's magnitude as an innovator and explorer of process, color and form has made him the sole proprietor of dynamic and unique sculptural methods. His vast body of work chronicles an epic journey from cast glass installations to assemblages of industrial detritus; from welded steel constructions and cast bronze forest floors to ceramic explosion pieces; and onward to massive bronze termite mounds and looming bronze roots. Tob ...Read More>> n's Steelroots series are informed by the calligraphy that captured his imagination while teaching in Japan in the 80′s and from his acquisition of the 19th Century Japanese Noh Manuscript. The quality of his brush strokes - the alternating intensity of color, the varying proportions of the drawn lines, the contrast between the dark ink and the untouched areas of the page, the intimation of depth - are all reflected in the sculptures. Some pieces are actual renderings of Japanese characters, which can read when the light casts their shadow on the ground. Tobin's drawn studies, done in Sumi ink on rice paper, echo the calligraphy of these old texts. Steve Tobin's formidable naturalistic approach to sculpture, with his cerebra and scientific curiosity of physics, nature, process and materials distances him from any notion that will explore a singular Modernist cause. Tobin holds a B.S. in Theoretical Mathematics from Tulane University in New Orleans, LA. Karl Zerbe: Works on Paper Appearing in the Chris Harris Gallery at 600 N. Woodland Blvd. Distinguished German-born American painter Karl Zerbe (1903 - 1972) was one of the founding members of the abstract expressionism movement. This exhibit will feature experimental collages and mixed media works primarily from the late 1960's, but also from the 1940's. Works on Paper is an exhibit that showcases some of Karl Zerbe's most experimental works. Collectors Choice: Blatt Collection Appearing in the Upper Galleries at 600 N. Woodland Blvd. Samuel Blatt's collection will feature outstanding European paintings, drawings and prints from the mid-17th to the early 20th century. More than 20 artists, such as Picasso, Dufy, Lacombe and Vuillard, will be represented. All of the creators in Mr. Blatt's personal collection are unique because each one makes a visual statement of quite his or her own making. They have sought art and quality by following no set path and chose to select carefully their own very private way between complex clusters of alternatives. They produced, as a result, art of profound individuality, honesty and quality. A well-chosen collection of a single work adds to its own light that reflected from the masterpieces among which it was found. For the collector, possessing such art allows him to participate quietly with artists of extraordinary integrity and vision in their day-by-day creative activity of trying to contact the divine, and to benefit, thereby, from their lifelong devotion to a particular inspiration and ideal.
