LEGOs and Luxury: Now This Is Living

By: Jill Martin

Last weekend, we took the family to LEGOLAND Florida in Winter Haven. They were having their Brick or Treat celebration (which was fantastic, by the way) and we wanted a little rest and relaxation, too. The answer: Omni Orlando Resort at ChampionsGate.

This resort sits on 1,200 sprawling acres and is only 25 minutes from LEGOLAND Florida. It’s close enough to the action yet worlds away from the hustle and bustle. There is so much to do onsite you may just forget about going to the theme parks.

For starters, there is an 850-foot lazy river that winds through tunnels, foliage and waterfalls. Grab a tube and float away. What a treat. Just the lazy river alone will bring us back. There are two pools onsite, too. A formal pool lined with well stocked cabanas and a zero-entry pool is perfect for families. Thrill seekers can check out the 125-foot corkscrew slide – hold on to your swimsuit!

Onsite dining provides five options, from the casual Broadway Deli to the luxurious Zen, with Pan-Asian cuisine and fresh sushi. It is gorgeous. We ate at Trevi’s and passed around family-size plates of Italian pastas, Caesar salad and the brick oven flat breads they’re famous for. Yeah, that barbeque chicken flatbread will bring me back here, too. Dads will love the upscale sports bar, David’s Club, with its handsome dark woods, huge flat screens and hand-cut steaks.

For the ultimate in pampering, their full-service Mokara Spa will do the trick. Hair, nails, make-up, sauna, relaxation room and a long menu of treatments from seaweed wraps to hot stone massages.

Kids are hardly left out of the fun; the Omni Kids Escape has 2,000 square feet of activities and adventure. Enroll your children ages 3-14 for the day or night and plan your own escape to one of those onsite, sexy restaurants.

Greg Norman golf courses, a huge fitness center, onsite shops, Starbucks coffee, tennis courts…you will love your stay at Omni Orlando.

Accommodations range from hotel rooms to multi-bedroom units. We got adjoining hotel rooms that worked out perfectly. Florida and Georgia residents can take advantage of $103 weekend rates through Dec. 15, 2012 and it includes a 20 percent discount on dining, spa and recreation.

LEGOLAND isn’t the only close theme park, either. This resort is six miles from Walt Disney World, 14 miles from SeaWorld and 16 miles from Universal. For reservations, call 800-THE-OMNI or log on to
