Beachview Golf Club on Sanibel: A Pretty Course on a Pretty Island

The Beachview Golf and Tennis Club on Sanibel Island is just as cute as a bug. Not those big cockroaches; I'm talking about one of those cute bugs. You know, like a ladybug.

It's a short course – remember, this is an island with limited space – with a par 70 and only a touch over 6,000 yards from the back tees. There are only two par-5s.

But, the design is an imaginative one, with a variety of interesting angles that will have you thinking your way around the scenic layout.

The lack of distance is countered by those angles and other obstacles, like tight fairways, some blind landing areas off the tee, false fronts and hidden water hazards. It helps to play the course with someone who knows it if you're playing it for the first time.

The semi-private layout is a blast to play, with some very fun risk/reward doglegs and some challenging carries over water. The greens are in good shape, if a tad slow.

It's a pretty course on a pretty island, and it was in pretty good shape the day I played it. You don't get any wide, sweeping views of the Gulf of Mexico, but there are plenty of water features and most of the holes are bordered by canals and small lakes and ponds. You'll also see plenty of southwest Florida wildlife on your way around, particularly those colorful, Florida birds, as well as the sort of beautiful plants and trees so typical on Sanibel .
