Yes, Siesta Key is home to the best beach in America, as just noted by Dr. Beach, but you can't spend ALL your time lolling on that beautiful soft sand, luxuriating in the caressing Gulf breeze and immersing yourself in the warm, turquoise waters.

Excuse me? Yeah, you're right. I guess maybe you can.

Still, if you're the active type and a golfer to boot, you could have a ball playing some of the golf courses within easy driving distance of Siesta Key. Dozens of top-notch golf courses dot the countryside around Siesta Key, Sarasota and Bradenton. And they cover every type of spectrum, from ritzy private oasis to rowdy general municipal.

For example, the Concession was voted the best new private course in the country in 2006 by Golf Digest. And Jacaranda and TPC Prestancia are other private courses that draw raves from both critics and players.

I've always enjoyed playing the Bobby Jones Golf Complex, a municipal layout in Sarasota. Buffalo Creek and the Manatee County Golf Club are also worthwhile munis.

The area sports a number of upscale publc courses as well, such as the Sarasota Golf Club, Sarasota National, the Preserve at Tara, Lakewood Ranch, Stoneybrook and the River Club.

So, if you can rouse yourself from your drowsy beach ecstasy, show off your tan at some of these world-class golf courses.
