Best Residential Golf in Florida

By: Tim McDonald

It's an economic fact of life that all golf courses can't be set down in pristine environments. Some of them – many of them – are built in residential neighborhoods. Many of them, in fact, are the star attractions.

That doesn't mean they can't be scenic and relatively private. Florida has a lot of top-notch "residential golf courses," and here are some of the best I've experienced, with more to follow in future blogs.

--  The Ocean course at Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast is one of my favorite courses anywhere. I can still remember the last time I played there, with the vivid views of the Atlantic Ocean. It's difficult to build homes on the sea, so that's a view that will always be there. No fewer than eight holes play along the Atlantic. There's also a superb Tom Watson design.

-- The Reunion Resort in Orlando is another place I get excited about visiting. I've played all three courses there several times and they're all excellent, particularly Independence. If you tend to favor perfectly manicured courses, you'll love Arnold Palmer's Legacy course, with the preternaturally white sand bunkers contrasting sharply with the deep green fairways.

-- Golden Ocala Golf and Equestrian Club is set in the horse country of Ocala. Yes, it's a strange combination, golf and horses, but it works. This area of central Florida has some of the best thoroughbreds in the country. The golf course draws inspiration from the best in the world: the 18-hole, Ron Garl design has eight replica holes based on Augusta, St. Andrews, Royal Troon and Baltusrol.
